Moving Tips

Moving can be a stressful time for everyone so here are a few tips which may take away some of the stress of moving to a new town and maybe a new state.

Once you have decided to move you should take the time to create a ‘to do list’ in order of when things need to be done and tick them off as you go. This will ensure that as the moving day edges closer you know you are well prepared and everything is taken care of.

We have prepared a sample checklist to make the process easier for you.

10 tips to ensure your move is as stress-free as possible

1. Label everything clearly

It is always a good idea to have the boxes labelled with your surname, delivery address and room where the box belongs. By doing this it means when you goods are being delivered the boxes end up in the right room saving you time when your unpacking.

2. Utilities

Arrange with your phone, internet, electricity, gas etc disconnected.

3. Have a moving day pack prepared

In the days leading up to the move start to create a pack which you will take with you to your new home. Some items you may wish to include are Linen and towels for your first night, tea and coffee and maybe some tinned food. toiletries, some cleaning products for the new home. It is also a good idea to have your phone chargers with you.

4. Check your car

Its not something that people often think about before moving house but check your car to make sure its ready for the long trip. The last thing you want is for your car to have a flat in the middle of nowhere only to realise your spare is not inflated enough.

5. Mail diversion

Have your mail diverted to your new home. Its always a good idea in case there is someone you have forgotten to let you have moved house.

6. Remember your pet

In the days leading up to the move have your beloved family pet stay with a friend or in a pet motel. The days leading up to the move and the day of the move can get rather hectic. Trying to find a missing pet is not something you need to add onto your ‘to do list’

7. Clean out your house

In the weeks leading up to your move sell or give away any items that you do not want to take with you to your new home. This will not only save you packing those unwanted items but you may just make a few dollars in the process.

8. Plan your new home

If possible obtain a floor plan of your new home and decide where you want specific pieces of furniture. Not only will this make the move easier it will save you shifting those heavy pieces of furniture when we have left your home.

9. Have the right boxes

Although it is not necessary for you to pack your belongings in removal cartons we do advise you use strong boxes for your belongings. We are able to move you goods if they are in any container (ie plastic tubs used for storing goods around the home), however as these containers are not designed for long distance removal they are likely to crack or break in transit.

10. Dismantle furniture

It is a good idea that furniture is dismantled where ever possible. If the furniture you are moving came in a flat pak form (similar to Ikea furniture) these items especially need to be dismantled as they are not designed to be transported assembled.
